About The Play

Its 1661, France is stable after decades of civil strife. A young and inexperienced Louis takes up the throne and attempts to make his “subjects applaud him”. But with courtiers and nobles all with “ancient scores to settle”, and the country penniless, Louis’ life, let alone his throne, are in danger. As Louis tries to bed every woman in the court, his Superintendent makes other plans for the Kingdom and the Monarchy. With the chase for money and woman going strong, a series of twists and turns propel the King, his women and the courtiers on a dangerous downward spiral in which people’s lives are ruined and positions of power made. If we accept that ‘power corrupts’ prepare to witness just how devastating that corruption can be…

Pre-show Talks

There will be a pre-show talk on Thursday 27th January in the auditorium by Professor Blanning entitled 'Power in Historical Context'. And on Saturday 29th, at 6pm in the ADC bar, there will be a question and answer session with the playwright Nick Dear.
